Maori Outreach Programme
We are pleased to appoint Gary to the staff of RWC. Gary is the first in New
Zealand to be appointed as a dedicated Maori exchange worker. This has come
about so that we at the exchange are better able to provide services in a manner
that is appropriate to this cultural group. Should you wish to contact Gary
please phone the exchange on 03 365 2293 or email him at

Melbourne Harm
Reduction Conference 2004
The staff at the Rodger Wright Centre have been busy applying for funding to
attend this conference in Melbourne. The conference has a strong focus on
minimising the harm and minimising the impact of alcohol and drug use.
The contents of the conference will focus on the following:
- Policies for harm minimisation
- The economics of drugs
- Indigenous populations
- Needle exchange programmes
- Media and harm reduction
- International treaties
It would be great for the staff to attend this conference and interact with
allied health workers from around the world, In particular the south
Pacific region.
In addition we have submitted an abstract presentation with an overview
of Needle Exchange in New Zealand, statistics, IDU populations and issues faced
on a local level.
We will keep you posted.
West Coast Mobile
Needle Exchange Programme
The Rodger Wright Centre has also been busy with negotiations with the
Ministry of Health in relation to setting up a service on the West Coast of the
South Island. This looks like it will begin in the New Year and be a mobile
service that will utilize the local IDU's populations along the coast. We will
keep you updated on the progress and notify you closer to the date with all the
relevant information and contact details.
